Highlight: Rene Roque

Rene Roque

Hello, my name is Rene Roque.

For the holidays, I hang out with my sister Donna for like Christmas and New Years. She’s my guardian and my Trustee, and she’s my older sister, who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When I go there, we mostly hang out and see other family. I love to play in the snow when it’s there.

I like a lot of movies, mostly comedy, Disney movies, Star Wars. Sometimes I watch the Star Wars animated series and DVR it while I’m not home. I’m into country music, oldies, some Latin, and Christian music. I have two dogs living with us. One is a Shiatsu, and the other one, I think is Dachshund. The Shiatsu is called Chewie and the other one is named Monster. When the care provider goes away for the weekend, I watch them for her.

On the weekends, I like to go to the mall and hang out with my friends. I also like to walk around and look to see
what’s on sale, what the prices are. Like if there’s something I really, really like, it can give me an idea of what I need to save money for.

I love to eat at Olive Garden. I love Italian food, subway sandwiches, and salads. I hang out with some friends at
Burger King and we eat stuff there too.

We have a ranch in Albuquerque, New Mexico and it’s a horse rescue ranch. It belongs to my other family, and when it snows up there, the horses love to play in it. We have a lot of horses, sixty-five to be exact. It’s a very big ranch. They find horses that people can’t take care of and we bring them in and they make sure they have their shots and they’re taken care of. Like if there’s a malnourished horse, we make sure it’s eating well. Some horses are expecting little ones.

During the week, I just pay attention to where I’m going. I’m riding the city bus now and I love it!

Consumer Highlight: Steve Vasquez

Steve Vasquez

Hello, my name is Steve Vasquez.

I work at Teledyne for ACI. I’ve been here for about 2 and a half years. When I’m not at work, I hang out with family and friends, stay home and chill, watch some movies. Sometimes I go and babysit my nephews.

I like to watch all kinds of different movies on Netflix. I haven’t been to the movies yet, but that’s what I want to do, I want to go over to Harkins and watch the movies that come out. I’ve seen some of the Star Wars and Marvel movies.

I also go riding around on my bike. I have a BMX bike, but it’s out of commission right now. I have another bike that I ride to work on, and whenever I go out I use that bike because it has brakes.

I used to go to a studio here in Redlands at Community Center. We could make music and beats there, but it’s been a while since I’ve been over there. They have a prolog on a computer where they have everything on there, where you could pick your own beats and combine them. They’re located at 11 West Washington Street, here in Redlands, Ca. For Thanksgiving I visited my sister in Calimesa. I smoked a ham on the bbq, and my sister made the turkey.

Spotlight On Blake Shimshock

Hi I’m Blake Shimshock. I run the Multimedia department for Ability Counts.

I’ve been involved in the film industry for almost 20 years. As a kid, I always had a fascination with cameras. I had that one uncle that always had the cool gadgets at his house.

While my cousins and friends were playing, I had a camera stuck to my face. My father was a movie projectionist, so we got to see a lot of movies for free. He would give me the posters of all the sci-fi films.

In 1977 when Star Wars hit theaters, I was blown away. I took writing classes plus introduction to film. Years later, some friends and I met an actor named Reggie Bannister; he’s in those Bmovie Horror films. He invited us to the set of Phantasm 4. I was so excited to be there.

We helped with lighting and equipment. I gravitated towards the camera crew and helped with the camera equipment. I’ve been hooked ever since.

In 2002 I met a few like-minded people and we started a film company. We still work together occasionally. I’ve worked on over 80 short films and features of all genres. I got into directing and directed some short films that aired on CBS and K-CAL 9. I was assistant camera for some Nickelodeon projects. I worked on a Sammy Hagar Public Service Announcement at Ontario Motor Speedway.

Locally, I’ve filmed videos for the City of Riverside and the city of Moreno Valley.

I stay busy doing what I love. It’s also great money.

Open Door Project Movie Day

On December 18th, Staff Member, Alma Reyna and her crew were treated to the movies with popcorn and snacks at Edwards Theater by the Manager of the Open Door Project. They watched Star Wars: The Last Jedi, then were taken to the BJ’s Brewhouse restaurant for brunch.

Thank You Open Door Project!
